friday night with THE CHRISTOPHERS. (thematic spoilers ahead!)
i didn’t expect to go to the movies on a friday evening and get a meditation on art, human life, human-created art, on friendship, old versus young, creatives versus critics. on love. on parenthood. but it is exactly what i needed right now. after just one watch, i can already tell THE CHRISTOPHERS is a film it’ll be hard for me to forget. michaela coel and sir ian mckellen’s chemistry and ornery generation-spanning friendship leaps off the screen. there’s so much wisdom and charisma and wit in the film along with the messiness of it. there’s something about steven soderbergh films i find fascinating — his latest entries get so much right, but not fully right. THE CHRISTOPHERS follows this pattern, but the right is REALLY right for me. verbose and heavy but brimming with barely contained passion and lightness. please see it and think about it with me.
