the reminder we all needed.

i love the movies.

like LOVE the movies. going to the movies is my JAM.

i try to be in the theater at least once a week. i’ve gone multiple times a week far too many times to count.

and on those occasions where a film hooks me from the very beginning? it’s hard to get me out of the theater.

over this past week, my opening question of every conversation has been: “have you seen ‘sinners’?????” what a revelation of a film. i’m not here to talk spoilers because you NEED to see it or if you have seen it you already know how incredible and moving and funny and sultry and sexy it is and you don’t want to ruin the experience for anyone else either.

instead, i want to talk about how amazing of a reminder “sinners” is that we need art.

WE NEED ART.

we need more art.

we need people to get their art funded.

we need people who are finding unique and inspiring ways to tell stories to share memories and reveal histories. we need people with no guardrails on their creativity. people who create work too compelling, too authentic, too human to ignore. the air has felt more electric since the film's release – as if we all needed a surprising jolt to brighten our days or get through them with a little bit more ease and excitement. can you feel it? we need art that allows your shoulders to drop and sigh with relief and to laugh and cry with pleasure.

and for that, i just want to say thank you to ryan coogler and the entire team that put this masterpiece of a film together. i’m grateful for what it is. i’m grateful for what it means. i’m grateful for what it’s doing to/for people, especially black people whose art is the lifeblood of culture in these united states and around the world. i’m grateful for the art it’s going to directly inspire.

and i’m gonna go see it for a sixth time or more!
